Lee Kai-Fu Lee, Global Vice-President of Google, Kenneth Lieberthal, former Senior Director for Asian policies in White House and “The New Yorker” panelist Evan Osnos and others were invited to the seminar. Lee Kai-Fu said during an interview that China’s young people actually have a positive power in their hearts because their starting point is the love for their country and they hope to see more transparency, but sometimes their actions appear to be a little radical. Therefore, ways should be found to help them better understand the situations worldwide and analyze all kinds of incidents rationally.
On May 1, the “Voice of America” quoted Wu Xu, an expert in strategic media relations and public relations from Arizona State University, that the background in which this generation of Chinese youths grew up gives them a high level of confidence. This kind of confidence and their renewed self-understanding are exactly what the previous generations of Chinese youths lacked. The West’s attacks on China stand in sharp contrast to their natural pride. Besides, the whole nation is involved in the process of repositioning while these youths are seeking for their individuality. Therefore, the natural germination brought by hormones combined with the inequalities brought by the outside world gives birth to a feeling of anger.
Jia Qingguo, Associate Dean of the School of International Studies at Peking University, told the Global Times that "Angry Youths" cannot represent the current generation of Chinese youths, and it is only because the Internet magnifies the emotional views of certain people. Jia believes that the Western media’s attention to and concern about the generation of Chinese youths are normal because for a growing world power like China, it is the youths which will decide it’s future domestic and foreign policies. Therefore, for the Western media, the views that the Chinese youths hold are of critical significance. Jia believes that it is also quite reasonable for most young people to feel proud of their country when it grows stronger. The generation of Chinese youths is now developing a reasonable and rational sense of patriotism. They tend to view issues from a more and more balanced perspective, reflect on joint developments of China and the outside world, and pursue the shared values of all human beings.
