50 young Chinese volunteers left Beijing on Tuesday for Ethiopia, in the largest volunteer group ever sent by China to a foreign country.

During their one-year stay in Ethiopia, the group will provide a variety of services, including Chinese language instruction, health care assistance, and the introduction of industrial technologies to support the development of rural areas.

The volunteers, whose average age is 27, were recruited nationwide.

China started sending young volunteers overseas in 2002. To date, around 122 volunteers have been sent to foreign countries such as Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
