In the Uygur language, Bazaar means "farm trade market". Small in stature, they are sites locals use to collect and distribute goods. But bazaars in Xinjiang are taking on a fresh appearance, as the region has witnessed constant economic growth since its establishment half a century ago. To mark the 50th anniversary of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, we'll go to its regional city of Urumqi to take a closer look at its famous International Grand Bazaar.

In Erdaoqiao, the commercial center of Urumqi, a unique complex with golden domes is especially conspicuous.

It is the international Grand Bazaar, built two years ago, which offers a blend of local and international options.

There, you can get a variety of ethnic handicrafts and local specialties... like hame melons, roasted whole lamb and Yengisar knives.

Other items from neighboring countries are also available...Pakistani vases, Russian telescopes and Turkish silk scarves.

Merchant said, "This is made in Turkey... this in Xinjiang... this from Pakistan... and these oblong scarves are from southern Xinjiang. New items will perhaps come in another two weeks."

Tourist said, "The Grand Bazaar is a must-see for tourists in Urumqi... not only to buy stuff, but so they can enjoy ethnic minority cultures, local food and performances. I know there's a tightrope walking show on here at night, with spectators are everywhere... that's just fabulous."

The performance the man mentions is in fact the traditional Dawazi. It's performed, free of charge, over the bazaar's square each night.

With Islamic architecture, an amazing array of goods and traditional arts on show, the Grand Bazaar is quickly becoming a landmark in Urumqi.

It attracts up to 100,000 tourists per day, during its busiest time in August and September.
