    Annette Bening portrays Julia Lambert, a successful actress trying to hold on to her position within the 1930s London theater community.

    This is the third Academy Award nomination for Annette Bening. She was previously nominated for:

    The Grifters (1990) -- Nominee, Actress in a Supporting Role

    Based on a novel by W. Somerset Maugham, the film centers on Julia Langdon, a middle-aged stage actress who is so much a reflection of her environment that she makes little distinction between acting and real life. As she finds her hold on fame slipping, however, Julia fights to maintain her place in the only world she knows or understands.
