China grants digital TV licenses

The monopoly held by China's state broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV), on digital television has been broken by the issuing of digital TV licences to four organisations.

According to Variety, the country's broadcasting administration has granted licences to China Broadcast Network, Shanghai TV, CHC Home Cinemas and a consortium of five other companies.

As Variety reported, foreign broadcasters in China are restricted to cable permits in enterprise zones and satellite access deals to hotels.

China aims to convert to digital broadcasting by 2010. It's estimated that there are 200,000 digital subscribers in the country, though the broadcasting administration is targeting 30m by 2005.
