There will be more than 30m digital television homes in China by 2008, according to a recent report cited by China's The People's Daily.

The report forecasts that in the country's present booming economic conditions, the number of digital sets sold is on target to exceed more than 1m by the end of this year. This represents a rapid acceleration in DTV sales of 67,000 in 2002 and 168,000 last year.China is expected to produce 6.5m digital TV receivers this year, with sales totalling some 32bn yuan (£2.1bn), rising to 20m sets and 77bn (£5.1bn) yuan by 2008.

The country is also developing digital video broadcast standards that are compatible with the European DVB-C standard, and now has two patented standards developed by Chinese institutions. Chinese regional authorities are also expected to subsidise digital receiving equipment to aid switchover.
