Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng yesterday invited Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, to visit the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.

Pelosi told Han that her 40-hour stay in the city was a good way to get to know modern China.

Pelosi, who was visiting with a delegation of US lawmakers, said she hopes her trip to China can deepen the understanding between China and the US and promote cooperation in areas such as finance, environmental protection, energy and cutting greenhouse emissions.

She said her visit to China was to meet old friends and make new ones. Han said Shanghai is the showcase of China's 30 years of reform and opening-up and hoped the city left Pelosi and her delegation with a good impression.

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Shanghai and San Francisco, the city Pelosi represents.
