   CCTV.COM   2003-08-05 13:08:01
The White House and State Department have dismissed media reports that Secretary of State Colin Powell and his deputy Richard Armitage plan to step down from their posts in early 2005,the end of the US president's first term in office.

The Washington Post reported that Powell and his top deputy have told National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice they don't want to stay on even if President George W. Bush is re-elected.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan called it "speculation and gossip." He said President Bush believes Powell is doing an "outstanding job" and looks forward to Powell continuing to work on the foreign policy team.

According to the Post, Powell has indicated that a promise to his wife, rather than any policy disagreements with others in the administration, is a key factor in his intention to serve only one term.
