Beckham scores first goal for Real Madrid

Tuesday's game started in a drizzle. The starting line up for Real Madrid was missing stars like Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Casilas. Perhaps it was fear of injury, or a desire to give second stringers a run. Either way, FC Tokyo did not look much of an opponent on paper. But for some reason, the Japanese took control at the beginning. And for a while, their fierce attacks put the Spanish footballers off their stride, coming close to scoring.

However, as the game wore on, Real Madrid moved into gear. In the 37th minute, David Beckham put Real Madrid one up with a trademark curling free kick from the left hand edge of the area. The kick came after Solari was tripped up just outside the box on a questionable decision by Japanese referee Masayoshi Okada.

Solari made it 2-0 for Madrid just before the break after picking up a rebound off a Portillo drive that Doi was unable to smother.

Ronaldo, who came on as a substitute after the break, put the visitors up 3-0 when he stepped around an FC defender and fired a right-foot blast into the far corner.
