Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has paid his first visit to South Africa. Liberia, terrorism and the economy ranked among the top concerns of talks between Kibaki and his South African counterpart Thabo Mbeki on Tuesday.

The first visit by a Kenyan head of state to South Africa came one day after Thabo Mbeki received a phone call from Liberian President Charles Taylor confirming his intention to step down next week, as expected.

Mbeiki, South African President, said Taylor would leave Liberia as soon as possible, either on Monday or the day after.

The summit talks, overshadowed by a blast in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, prompted the two presidents to agree to work closer on what Mbeiki called the scourge of "global terrorism."

On the sidelines of their official talks, Mbeiki and Kibaki discussed the recovery plan known as the New Partnership for Africa's Development. Both leaders also agreed to set up a joint commission to tackle issues that include trade, conflict resolution and the improvement of governance in Africa.
