More Tibetan people suffering from cataracts will have their sight restored - thanks to a program co-organized by the Australia Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China, working with overseas Chinese organizations. Free operations will be available in Lhasa, capital of the Tibetan Zang Autonomous Region of China.

The Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China has donated medicine and medical supplies worth 180,000 US dollars to Tibet. 27 eye specialists from Australia will carry out free operations for more than 1,000 cataract patients in a week's time.

The program is part of the Tibet "Lightening Project" which started in 1993 and has so far restored the vision of more than 14,000 cataract patients. It's estimated that about 380,000 Tibetans suffer from cataract problems.
