The World Health Organization announced on Tuesday the lifting of its travel advisory against visiting China's Taiwan Island because of the threat posed by SARS.

The WHO's director for the Western Pacific region, Shigeru Omi, made the announcement in Malaysia on the sidelines of an international conference on SARS. Omi said the WHO's decision, with immediate effect, was based on the overall improving situation on the island. He added that the WHO felt the risk to travelers from SARS in Taiwan was now minimal.

The island's medical experts are attending the conference with the approval of China's central government. They expressed delight at the announcement, but said the people of Taiwan and the island's economy had suffered greatly as a result of the virus, which has killed 83 people there.
