Chinese President Hu Jintao has left Russia for Evian, France, where he will attend an informal dialogue between G-8 leaders and those not in the group. During his stay in St. Petersburg, Hu Jintao met with leaders of Japan and India on Saturday on the sidelines of festivities to celebrate the city's 300th anniversary.

In his meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Hu Jintao said that to develop bilateral relations in the new century, the two sides must bear in mind the history and lessons of the past while cherishing more recent achievements.

He said both sides should adhere to the joint statements and the Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed by the two countries. Koizumi said Japan fully recognizes the importance of Sino-Japanese relations and hopes to constantly develop common ties.

In a separate meeting with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Hu Jintao invited Vajpayee to visit China. The Indian Prime Minister said he was looking forward to coming to China, and that he hoped a fair solution acceptable to both sides could be found to solve the two countries' border issue.
