Hu Jintao in Russia for 3-day state visit

    Chinese President Hu Jintao has arrived for a three-day state visit. While in the Russian capital, he will attend the third summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He and his wife were welcomed by Russian Vice Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko.

    Hu Jintao's first overseas official visit as the president of China started on Monday afternoon, when he stepped off the plane in Moscow. Hu, his wife and the entourage were welcomed by Russian Vice Prime Minister Khristenko and the Chinese ambassador to Russia. Both Chinese and Russian anthems were played at the welcoming ceremony.

    Hu delivered a speech at the airport. He said the peoples of Russia and China have maintained friendship for a long time and both of them cherish the wish to develop long-term, stable and friendly relations. The social, political and economic foundation for the Sino-Russian strategic cooperative partnership is becoming increasingly solid and such a relationship holds vast prospects for development.

    President Hu will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. They will exchange views on how to strengthen bilateral ties, and other important international issues.
