New SARS case reported in Singapore
   CCTV.COM   2003-05-19 10:05:04
Singapore has reported its first new SARS case in 19 days. One more day without any new reported SARS cases would have enabled the World Health Organisation to classify Singapore a SARS-free country. The WHO says a country must not have any new SARS case for 20 consecutive days before it can declare the nation has controlled an outbreak of SARS.

A Malaysian man living in Singapore was identified as having contracted SARS. He began suffering from a fever on May 5, and results from medical tests conducted on Saturday and Sunday confirmed that he had contracted SARS.

The source of his infection has not yet been determined. The man had made several visits to Johor Baru in southern Malaysia before being diagnosed as having contracted SARS. The information has been passed on to Malaysian health authorities.

Singapore has the world's fourth highest SARS death toll, reporting a total of 206 people infected and 28 deaths during the outbreak.
