A senior World Health Organization official has warned that health workers should remain vigilant about SARS despite the number of probable SARS cases declining around the world.

David Haymann, the WHO executive director for communicable disease, urged scientists to continue case identification through surveillance.

Haymann also said that he was quite confident that emerging infections could be contained with high-level government commitment and international collaboration if necessary. The WHO official also urged health workers to keep up the global surveillance for influenza and other emerging infectious diseases.
