The Philippine Department of Health has quarantined two female patients suspected of being infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS),a ranking health official said May 28.

The first patient, a domestic helper from Hong Kong, arrived in the country on May 24 and contracted fever the next day. She was first confined at a hospital in the Ilocos Region in the north, and will be moved to in Manila soon, Consortia Lim-Quizon, national epidemiology center director said.

She added that the patient was earlier diagnosed with cancer, which might have caused the fever.

The second suspected SARS case arrived from China's Taiwan Province on May 23, and contracted fever a few days later. The Department of Foreign Affairs announced on May 27 the successive lifting of travel restrictions on Filipino passengers as a result of the de-listing of the Philippines as a SARS-affected country by the World Health Organization.
