China's Premier vows to revive industrial base

    Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has highlighted an urgent need to revive industrial mainstays in northeastern China. The Premier is touring Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces to assess the state of the region's industry.

    During his three-day trip, Wen Jiabao went to several key northeastern cities, including Daqing, Harbin, Jilin and Changchun. He inspected the renowned Harbin Aircraft Industry Group, Daqing Petro Chemical Company and First Automotive Works. He met with representatives from a number of state-owned enterprises to discuss how to speed up the reform of old industry bases.

    Wen Jiabao also visited some laid-off workers to make sure their needs were being addressed. He then went to Jilin University's number one hospital to thank the staff for their work in the anti-SARS campaign.

    On Sunday, Wen Jiabao addressed the question of reviving the region's industrial bases, pledging support for the sector. He said the bases are key to realizing the nation's integrated development. He pointed to several reform needs to change the economic structure, to strengthen technology, to create more job opportunities, to provide a better social security system and to improve scientific and education levels.
