During the SARS outbreak, some people lost their lives, while many more lost their jobs. Vice Premier Huang Ju is currently visiting Shanxi, one of the worst-hit areas in China. He has urged local governments to pay more attention to creating jobs there.

The vice premier arrived in Shanxi on Thursday. He visited several state-owned enterprises, which laid off large numbers of workers during the SARS scare. Huang also visited local re-employment centers and talked to laid-off workers in the cities of Taiyuan and Datong.

At a briefing with local officials, Huang Ju said Shanxi should make it a priority to improve employment and re-employment prospects for the rest of the year. He warned that structural adjustment must take into account the social effects of economic reform, including unemployment. The vice premier said the key to reducing unemployment is to create more jobs and provide off-the-job skill training.
