A group of high-ranking government officials went back to school on Monday in Beijing. They are taking part in a three-month training programme at the prestigious Tsinghua University and later at Harvard in the US. The program is part of a plan devised by China's Ministry of Personnel to improve the managerial skills of government officials.

The 60 classmates from this class are high-ranking government officials from all over China. On their curriculum are subjects such as government restructuring and state-own asset management. In the coming 11 weeks, they will pursue courses of study at both Tsinghua and Harvard Universities.

Funded by the Ministry of Personnel, this free training programme had its first intake last year. And the first class of 55 students have already finished their classes and come back from the United States. Their curriculum covered over 20 subjects such as marketing, financing, agriculture and city planning. The whole training project will last for five years and will bring over 300 high-ranking government officials back to school and up to date.

Many provincial and municipal governments across China have already seized the trend by planning to send their own officials to overseas for training.
