Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan has urged the country's less developed western areas to seek innovative approaches to development.

Zeng made the statement at a State Council-sponsored symposium on western development in Yinchuang, capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Earlier, local officials from six northwestern provinces briefed the vice premier on the economic situation in their regions.

Zeng Peiyan said the country's western areas have made substantial economic and social progress in the past three years. He said major projects, such as the Qinghai-Tibetan railroad, West-East gas pipeline, and West-East electricity transmission line, have boosted living standards.

However, he said the west still faces many challenges. He noted the importance of coordinating environmental and economic policies, and stressed the need for greater emphasis on education, health and culture, and infrastructure construction.
