Chinese FM meets Singaporean counterpart

    Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said on Friday that consolidating and reinforcing the relationship between China and ASEAN is of great strategic significance to both sides. Li Zhaoxing was speaking in Singapore where he is on an official visit at the invitation of Singaporean Foreign Minister S. Jayakumar.

    During his meeting with his Singaporean counterpart, Li Zhaoxing said the purpose of his visit was to strengthen relations between the two countries. Li said Singapore has been a significant factor in the development of the relationship between China and ASEAN countries. He hopeed that Singapore will continue its efforts in promoting the healthy development of the relationship between China and ASEAN countries.

    Foreign Minister Jayakumar said that Singapore attaches great importance to the development of relationship between Singapore and China. He said that bilateral ties have been growing smoothly and the two countries have sound relations in political and economic cooperation.

    After the meeting, the two ministers also witnessed the exchange of notes on the amendments of the minutes of the Reciprocal Training Program. The five-year program was first established in 1998 and is to be extended to 2008.

    Later in the day, Li Zhaoxing also met Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, Vice Premier Lee Xian Lung and Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
