Youth League congress opens in Beijing

    The 15th National Congress of the Communist Youth League of China has opened. President Hu Jintao, Chairman of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and other state leaders attended the opening of the first Youth League gathering in the new millennium.

    President Hu Jintao and other leaders were greeted with prolonged applause as they entered the Great Hall of People to congratulate the congress on its convention.

    Wu Guanzheng, a Standing Committee member of the CPC Politburo, delivered the opening speech on behalf of the Communist Party of China, in which he reviewed the young people's contribution to China's economic development and call on the youth across the country to devote themselves to building a prosperous society.

    Zhou Qiang, who is a representative of the Youth League's 14th central committee, responded to the CPC call in his report.

    The Youth League has developed quickly in the past five years. By the end of last year, China had over 3 million youth leagues branches and nearly 70 million youth league members.

    Over 1,500 youth league members from around the country, 3,500 representatives from all walks of life attended the congress.
