Top Chinese leaders pledge support for SAR chief

    Top Chinese leaders have pledged central government's commitment to the "one China, two systems" policy and the principle of Hong Kong being ruled by the people of Hong Kong. During separate meetings with Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee-hua, both President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao said the central government gives full support to his administration to implement the Hong Kong Basic Law.

    Tung Chee-hua arrived in Beijing on Saturday to brief the leaders on the latest situation in Hong Kong and consult central government leaders over the recent social and economic developments in the region.

    Hu Jintao said that the central government has paid close attention to the situation in Hong Kong and believes it is the duty of the region to enact legislation to protect national security and unity.

    The president expressed his confidence that through wide consultation, the proposed national security legislation would win support among Hong Kong compatriots.

    But he added that the central government would take a hands-off approach towards Hong Kong's regional affairs.

    In his meeting with Tung Chee-hua, Premier Wen Jiabao echoed the president's views on Hong Kong affairs. The premier said the central government is fully behind the SAR chief executive and his administration.

    Wen Jiabao noted that the central government will make further arrangements to implement the landmark Close Economic Partnership Arrangement pact. Specifically, the government will allow Hong Kong greater access to value-added telecommunications services, tourism, finance markets.
