The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has announced the resignation of two key officials. On Wednesday evening, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said he had accepted the resignations of Security Secretary Regina Ip, and Financial Secretary Antony Leung.

Tung said Ip submitted her resignation earlier last month for personal reasons, and that he had tried to persuade the security secretary to stay in the post. But the chief executive was unable to change her mind. He added that the financial secretary resigned on Wednesday night, and Tung accepted it after his careful consideration.

Tung Chee Hwa praised the two officials for their efforts in their respective posts during the past years, saying the two had solved many tough problems the SAR government had faced. He especially paid tribute to Leung's work in helping to revitalize Hong Kong's economy before and after the SARS outbreak.

The chief executive said he would ask the central government to grant the two officials leave of their posts according to the basic law.
