China is building up a national contingency command center. Representatives of Chinese Health Ministry announced this in Beijing this morning at a symposium on the economic and social impact of the SARS epidemic.

The meeting, China-ASEAN Symposium on Economic and Social Impact of SARS, was convened by China's Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and State Development and Reform Commission.

Attendants agreed that in the context of economic globalization and regional cooperation, any public health crisis can quickly spread into a regional or even global crisis. It is therefore necessary to increase cooperation on a broad scale.

A senior official from the Chinese Health Ministry(MOH) said that flaws in the nation's public health system were exposed following the outbreak of SARS. He said that the ministry is putting more emphasis on building up a contingency system, in order to increase its ability to respond to sudden outbreak of diseases.

Xiao Donglou, deputy director of Disease Prevention & Control Dept. of MOH, said, "In the near future, we will have a national center to organize and coordinate different departments when a disease breaks out suddenly. In this way, the disease will be brought under control more quickly and effectively."

Xiao Donglou said that the contingency center is now under construction. It will include three parts, namely, command and monitoring network, technological support systems, and is expected to be completed in 2008.
