Senior Chinese party official meets Argentine vice president

    Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Argentine Vice President Daniel Scioli on Friday in Buenos Aires.

    Argentina is an important nation in Latin America, and China attaches importance to developing friendly and cooperative ties with it, said Li, who arrived in Buenos Aires Thursday for an official goodwill visit.

    Since the two nations forged diplomatic ties 31 years ago, bilateral cooperation has been fruitful in the political, economic, trade, scientific and technological, and cultural fields with the friendly ties developing continuously, he said.

    Li expressed appreciation for the Argentine government's adherence to the one China policy and its understanding and support for China on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and human rights, and reiterated China's support for Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvinas Island.

    He hoped that both sides would further strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the new century, so as to push bilateral friendly cooperation to a new height.

    Li also spoke positively of the relationship between the political parties of the two countries, expressing the CPC's readiness to further strengthen friendly cooperation with Argentina's major parties on the basis of the principles of independence, full equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

    Scioli, also president of the Senate, extended a welcome to Li on behalf of President Nestor Kirchner, saying China is not only a friendly partner to Argentina, but is also a country very important to the whole world.

    The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues. Li said China will continue dialogue and expand cooperation with the South American Common Market.

    Li came to Argentina after winding up his trip to Cuba. Argentina is the second leg of Li's tour, which will also take him to New Zealand.
