The visiting President of the Republic of Korea (the ROK) Roh Moo-hyun has called for closer cooperation with China to promote peace and prosperity in northeast Asia. Roh made the call in an address at Tsinghua University, one of China's most prestigious institutes on Wednesday. The ROK president continues his visit to China with a stop in Shanghai now.

Addressing the Tsinghua University, Roh Moo-hyun expressed his confidence that Northeast Asia will grow into an economic center equal to the European Union and North America - becoming a "prosperous hub" in terms of manufacturing and IT.

Maintaining peace in the Korean Peninsula was a central issue in his speech, the ROK president saying that dialogue and openness are vital.

" My sincere desire is that North Korea joins the sphere of prosperity and peace. When North Korea discards its nuclear program and comes forward onto the path of dialogue and openness, the rest of the world will not spare the support and co-operation it needs. "

In his speech, he also commended the positive and constructive role that China was playing to solve the nuclear issue and to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

On regional cooperation, the president said that the construction of a "Steel Road" connecting the Korean Peninsula, China and the European Union could be a pioneer project. During his visit to the Sino-ROK joint venture ---- the Beijing Hyundai Company, he said that investment in China by large-scale Korean companies would bring huge benefits to both countries without undermining the ROK's status as a manufacturing base.

On Wednesday, the third day of his visit to China, Roh Moo-hyun found time to do some sight-seeing - visiting the Great Wall.

Roh Moo-hyun is now in China's financial hub Shanghai to continue his four-day state visit to China. He is accompanied by about 30 Cabinet ministers and ROK businessmen.
