Senior Chinese Party official meets Cuban parliament leader

    Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China is now in Cuba. On Tuesday, the third day of his visit, he met with parliamentary leader Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada.

    Li Changchun spoke of the progress in Sino-Cuban cooperation in various fields in recent years. He highlighted the long-term cooperation between the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba.

    Li Changchun said exchanges between the legislatures will help improve their work and contribute to democracy and the rule of law in the two countries. He pledged that the NPC will continue to work for friendship and cooperation with the Cuban assembly.

    Alarcon, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, echoed the remarks on the importance of this cooperation. He said frequent exchanges demonstrate the close friendship and the Cuban assembly is ready to take it even further.

    After the meeting, Li Changchun visited a genetic engineering and biotech center in Havana. Earlier Tuesday, he met Otto Rivero Torres, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Youth Union. He also visited Havana University.
