Fidel Castro meets with senior Chinese leader

    Cuban President Fidel Castro Monday met and held talks with visiting senior Chinese leader Li Changchun in Havana. The two leaders exchanged views on bilateral relations and international issues of common concern. Li, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, also held separate working talks with two senior Cuban officials.

    During the talks, Li Changchun first conveyed the cordial regards of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Castro. He said the past decade had witnessed the greatest development of Sino-Cuban ties. He noted that the two countries had exchanged in-depth views and reached a wide-ranging consensus. He said under the new global political and economic environment, both sides should further expand cooperation and explore new ways of working together to make continued progress in bilateral ties.

    Li spoke highly of Cuba's achievements in socialist revolution and construction, saying China is convinced that, under Castro's leadership, the Cuban Communist Party and people are fully capable of overcoming all difficulties and achieving greater progress.

    Castro expressed his gratitude for the Chinese government and its people's long-time support and understanding to his country. He said Cuba values very much its relations with China, and to its cause of nation-building. He said that Cuba could draw on China's successful experience and expressed his hope to further strengthen its ties with China in an all-round way.

    Li Changchun also held separate working talks with two senior Cuban officials, who are both members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.

    Li gave a briefing on China's domestic economic situation. He expressed the hope that both sides would make greater efforts to expand the volume and scope of economic and trade cooperation, and continue to increase the cooperation.

    Prior to the talks, Li presented a wreath at the monument of Jose Martin, Cuba's national hero, poet and writer.

    Li Changchun arrived in Havana Sunday evening at the invitation of the Cuban Communist Party.

    Cuba is the first leg of Li's three-nation tour, which will also take him to Argentina and New Zealand.
