Over 300 tourism operators and journalists from Taiwan are on the mainland for a three-day visit. An official from the mainland tourism authority says the visit is a good sign that the cross-strait travel market is beginning to recover from SARS.

A reception for the visitors was held at the Great Hall of the People Saturday evening. Deputy director of the China National Tourism Administration, Gu Chaoxi, noted that SARS had badly affected tourism across the strait. However, the visit indicates bothside's desire to see the market recover. The Taiwan tourism operators will visit Beijing and Guilin.

"The mainland market plays a very important role in the Taiwan tourism industry. 3.66 million tourists from Taiwan visited the mainland last year. Our trip here is to gear up for the recovery of tourism across the Straits," said Zeng Shenghai, head of the visiting group.

Recent years have seen a steady rise in the number of tourists from Taiwan visiting the mainland. By the end of 2002, over 24 million people from the island had made the trip. Originally, southeast China was their favored destination. Now, increasingly, they are branching out to all parts of the mainland.
