The Fourth Beijing Chaoyang International Business Festival is to be held on October 9-12 to promote economic activities and investment in the area. This was announced at a press conference given by the organizing committee of the festival on Thursday.

The press conference opened with a general introduction of the annual festival and an outline of the activities being organized this year. Highlights of the festival include an international financial services and office building projects expo. There will also be a series of promotions for projects in the financial, trade, manufacturing and high-tech industries and other sectors.

Acting Director of Chaoyang District Chen Gang said, "During this festival, we put our stress on the promotion of the Central Business District as well as the development of a modern service industry in Chaoyang District. Among them, international financial services is key to the development of a modern service industry."

Chen Gang said Chaoyang is an important area for development ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Among the specific areas designated for development, Chen Gang ended speculation over the fate of one of Beijing's most famous night life areas, South Sanlitun's Bar Street - a popular meeting place for locals and foreigners alike.

Chen Gang said Sanlitun is well known around the world and in China and efforts are being made to re-develop the area with special Beijing characteristics.

"We want to use the market to guide the development of a relaxation and cultural area which matches the culture of Beijing as a former emperors' city and international center," Chen Gang said.

Without going into specifics, Chen Gang acknowledged that development would be going ahead and within a few months Sanlitun would have a new look. But he confirmed that the area would remain an entertainment venue.
