BASF, one of the world's leading chemical companies, has announced plans to build a new integrated production facility in Shanghai. The plant will produce PolyTHF and THF, essential components in the manufacture of elastic spandex fibres. It will be the largest PolyTHF production facility in the world and also BASF's first investment project in China that is wholly owned from its inception.

PolyTHF is an important component in the manufacture of elastic spandex fibers, which are widely used in textile applications. THF is the precursor for PolyTHF and is also used as a specialty solvent for pharmaceutical production.

BASF's new plant at the Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2004 and will supply the rapidly expanding spandex fibers market in China.

BASF also has production facilities for THF and PolyTHF in Germany, the US, Japan and South Korea.

The firm currently operates ten wholly owned subsidiaries and seven joint ventures in cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing and Guangzhou.
