Bohai Sea Economic Zone making big contribution
   CCTV.COM   2003-07-27 09:07:32
In the first six months of 2003, economy in the Bohai Sea Economic Zone has grown rapidly. China's Bohai Sea Economic Zone is made up of the municipalities of Beijing and Tianjin, and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, and Liaoning. It has become the third driving area of China's economic development, next to the Yangtze Delta and Pearl River Delta.

In the past six months, the Bohai Sea Economic Zone has enjoyed a growth rate of over 9 percent and produced a GDP of more than one fifth of the country's overall GDP.

The provinces of Shandong and Liaoning, which are the two wings of the economic zone, have played a leading role in the regional development backed by their traditional advantages in heavy industry. The municipality of Tianjing, located in the zone center, has seen a dramatic increase in hi-tech industries, with its convenient geographic location, and an inflow of foreign investment.

The economic zone is characterized by its increasingly closer regional cooperation. Many provincial state owned enterprises have moved research and development departments to Beijing while building their production bases in cost effective cities.

Wang Xiaoping, director of Office of Mayors, Bohai Sea Economic Zone, said, "The Bohai Sea Economic Zone is a region with a heavy distribution of traditional industries. So it was much affected by its legacy from the days of the planned economy. We need to work more on the readjustment of economic structure, allocation of work and the renovation of concepts."

The economic zone is integrating Tianjin airport with Beijing airport to build the biggest air distribution center in the north China.

Meanwhile, a number of industrial reorganization projects have been launched in Liaoning, and Shandong is developing a production base for Japan and South Korean electronic products.

With a clear picture of its advantages and disadvantages, the Bohai Sea Economic Zone is striving to face the challenges of globalization.
