A vital section of China's long-awaited West-East gas pipeline project has been successfully built. On Friday, the nearly 2,000 meter span traversing the Yangtze River in east China's Nanjing City was completed.

The construction of the "shield-driven" section of the pipeline had been difficult due to the complicated rock conditions along both banks of the river. Increased water pressure during the flood season has also added to the complexity of the project. Chinese experts used innovative measures and new equipment to solve the various problems. The West-East natural gas transmission pipeline has been designed to supply billions of cubic meters of natural gas each year. The natural gas will be transferred to the country's east from China's northwest through a pipeline some 4,200 kilometers long.

The West-East gas pipeline project is expected to go into operation on a trial basis from October 1, with commercial operations starting next January.
