Chinese lighter makers win dumping suit

Chinese makers of cigarette lighters have scored a major victory, in a dumping suit filed by their counterparts in the European Union. The EU launched the investigation into refillable lighters from China last June.

The Association of Lighter Makers in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, says it received written notice from the EU Thursday, saying its European counterpart has withdrawn its dumping suit.

Zhao Jian, lawyer of Jiaruicheng Law Office, Zhejiang Province, said, "We have contacted the French law office handling the case. They say the EU is giving the Chinese side ten days to respond. If Chinese producers raise no objection, the case will end automatically in ten years and then we win the suit."

China exports about 500 million lighters to the global market and supplies about 80 percent of the total lighter market in the EU.

To restrict Chinese exports, the European Lighter Producers Association lobbied the EU to initiate dumping investigations last June. Fifteen Chinese firms in Wenzhou answered the charges and last September, they cooperated with EU investigators. EU officials agreed production costs in Wenzhou were truly low. This forced the European side to withdraw their suit unconditionally.
