China's National Bureau of Statistics is due to issue the latest quarterly gross domestic product data in the near future. The most recent figures from Shanghai and Guangdong show that the first half of this year saw continued rapid GDP growth in the country's most developed regions.

The economy in Shanghai grew by more than 11 percent year on year to 282 billion yuan, or 34 billion US dollars. That's the biggest half-year increase in five years. Officials attribute the double-digit growth to constant improvements in the development environment, deepened structural adjustment and the quick response to the SARS outbreak.

In Guangdong, GDP in the first six months increased by nearly 13 percent over the same period last year, the highest growth in eight years.
