Located in a traditional city tower in Beijing, the Red Gate Gallery has opened its doors for an exhibition of some avant-garde modern Chinese paintings. Living up to its name - "Experimental Ink and Wash, " the style has making a splash in Chinese fine art circles, since the unique art form first appeared in the 1990's.

At first sight, you may feel a little confused, but on a second look, they throw up something unexpected. In the works of experimental ink and wash, the sense of space and mode of structure are different from traditional paintings. Brushwork and ink application technique is no longer the center of artistic expression, even though the material or rice paper is still dominant.

Instead of lyrical and poetic harmony, these artists have adopted a non-logical form such as dislocation and collage, thus extending traditional Chinese painting styles into the realm of the modern social condition. A young critic at the gallery offers a general picture before we delve deeply into each work.

This "Fiction" consists of woven ribbons, seemingly in disorder but actually conveying a confused train of thought. The creator tries to convey to the audience that people have a strong desire to escape from the complicated, troublesome world.

And these huge patterns with the dark backdrop create a shocking visual effect. They are called "Paper boats in Universe" which depicts the feeling of a misplaced space.

"Classification of significance" is a typical experimental piece with more humanistic connotations and a spiritual pursuit.

The aspect of the mind is especially emphasized in experimental ink and wash, and it distinguishes it from the academic Chinese painting style that focuses on external life.
