After two days of repair work, the second heavy water reactor at Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant went back into operation on Tuesday afternoon, providing clean electricity to residents in eastern China.

The cooling system of the second heavy water reactor developed problems and the reactor was shut down on Sunday evening. Staff did immediate repair work and it was back in operation by Tuesday afternoon.

The second heavy water reactor at Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in east China's Zhejiang Province went into commercial power generation on July 24. It is the largest project financed jointly by China and Canada. The reactors, which have a life span of about 40 years, are expected to produce about 10 billion kilowatts of electricity each year.

Now both generating units are operational. The first unit has been operating safely at full capacity since late December.
