Investigators probing a deadly explosion that ripped through a firecracker factory in northern China on Monday say scorching summer heat triggered the blast. So far, 29 people have been confirmed dead and another 91 are still in hospital. Meanwhile the rescue operation at the accident site has finished.

The explosion, in the city of Xinji in Hebei Province, happened on Monday, and the fire was not put out until early on Tuesday morning.

Seven of the most seriously injured blast victims have been transferred from nearby hospitals and clinics to a hospital affiliated to a steel factory in Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei Province. Three of the seven have extensive burns, two have major non burn-related injuries, while the remaining two suffered lighter injuries. The most serious patient is a 21-year-old woman with burns covering 90 percent of her body.

To prevent their wounds from becoming infected, the five most seriously injured patients are undergoing special treatment to keep the wounds dry. They have also been given infusion and oxygen therapy. Up till now, the condition of these seven patients has been stable.

"We are taking active measures to save the lives of the injured. Right now, the condition of the patients is steady. I hope they can all recover soon," said Zhao Liankui, the director of Burns Department of Shijiazhuang Steel Hospital.

Meanwhile, Shijiazhuang's first-aid center and People's Hospital are also treating two patients whose conditions they say are serious.
