Beijing launches inspection on restaurant hygiene
   CCTV.COM   2003-07-29 13:07:49
In a unannounced inspection Monday night, the health department in Beijing found many restaurants in the city are operating without a government certificate proving their hygiene standards.

The snap inspection, dubbed Operation Golden Shield, is to assess the hygienic conditions of the city's restaurants. The result is somewhat discouraging for regular diners. Many owners of the restaurants the health department visited failed to present the hygiene certificate required by law. Even those that did posses such a certificate were often reluctant to renew it before the deadline and let it expire.

In an overall assessment, officials with the health department estimate more than 10,000 people are working for restaurants in Beijing without a health certificate.
