China's 973 project, a national initiative to improve the sharing of knowledge and promote primary research in scientific projects, has finished its preliminary yearly evaluation for 2003. For the first time, the evaluation was undertaken through inter-net assessment.

The preliminary project evaluation involves 7 areas, covering agriculture, energy, information, resource availability, population and health. More than 200 experts evaluated 247 projects online and 96 of them were selected for reassessment. The evaluation process involves multiples rounds of assessment to decide which projects go forward to be formally included in the 973 plan.

The 973 project was proposed on March the second 1997 at a meeting of China's top consultative body, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),. The project was earmarked to receive around 500 million US dollars in funding under China's 10th five-year plan, which took effect from 2001.
