Up to now, there has only been one infectious disease or food poisoning case reported from China's flooded affected areas. One patient from Siyang County in East China's Jiangsu Province died of epidemic encephalitis B. Other disaster areas have not reported any fatalities.

According to the Chinese Health Ministry, the most common diseases in the flooded areas include dysentery, malaria, and hepatitis. Poor hygiene and climate conditions are the main reasons for the spread of viruses. Since July the 14th, Anhui, Hunan, Jiangsu, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces have taken measures to prevent the spread of epidemic diseases. Experts from the Chinese Health Ministry have also arrived at the disaster areas to help guide the rescue and disease prevention operations.
