The Venice Biennale's 50th International Exhibition of Art, the most significant showcase of contemporary art in the world, is unveiling China's national art works for the first time in the Biennale's more than 100 years of history. Chinese artists are showcasing their art works at a branch of the international art show, which opened on June 14 and runs until late August.

This year's showcase is titled "Dreams and Conflicts." Due to the SARS epidemic, instead of being shown in Venice, China's art works are being exhibited at the Guangzhou Art Gallery, in the capital of south China's Guangdong Province.

The China international Exhibition Agency is appointed by the Chinese Ministry of Culture. Its participation marks the first time the state has given its blessing to the display of Chinese art at the important international art show.

Fan Di'an, planner for Venice Biennale, said, "In today's international art world, art activities are no longer restricted to one time and place. Our exhibition in Guangzhou is an example of this flexibility. It's an indispensable part of the whole Venice Biennale art exhibition. The exhibition will give a full impression of China's art."

Wang Huansheng, head of Guangzhou Art Gallery, said, " We hope this show will have something for all visitors to appreciate. I think the most interesting way to communicate with the society is to use the language of art."

During the short Venice art show, many symposiums will also be held to discuss Chinese and international art.
