Chinese swimmers have added a bronze to their medal tally in the women's 4-by-200-meter freestyle relay final last night at the 10th Swimming World Championships in Barcelona. But the stars of the night were Japanese breaststroke ace Kosuke Kitajima and Russian veteran Alexander Popov.

The Chinese swimmers were striving for another gold, but had to settle for their bronze last night. The American team took the gold and Australian the silver.

Widely thought of as the pride of Asia, 21-year-old Japanese Kosuke Kitajima did not let his fans down. He won his second gold medal and set a second world record in the men's 200-meter breaststroke final. In the men's 100-meter freestyle final, 32-year-old Russian superstar Alexander Popov eclipsed two of the world's fastest freestyle swimmers, Australian Ian Thorpe and Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband. Host Spain also saw its first gold medal of the championships.

Nina Zhivanevskaya, originally a Russian native, took out the women's 50m backstroke final.
