Chinese swimmer Yang Yu has added a bronze to China's medal tally in the women's 200-meter freestyle final. Last night's medal kept China in the top four teams on the medal tally of the 10th Swimming World Championships, together with Russia, Australia and the United States.

19-year-old Yang Yu is China's best female short-distance freestyle swimmer. She was the silver-medalist at the last world championships in Japan. But a gold medal has remained elusive for her.

Alena Popchanka from Belarus won the first ever world swimming gold medal for her country in the same event. Slovakia's Martina Moravcova won silver.

Ian Thorpe's performance was still shining last night. Together with his Australian teammate, he won his third gold in this championship in the men's 4-times-200-meter freestyle relay. James Gibson of Britain won gold in the men's 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 27.56 seconds. Defending champion Michael Phelps of the United States remained unbeaten in his specialty, the men's 200-meter butterfly.
