The Shanghai magnetic suspension train line has successfully completed a two-way test. During Thursday's tests, the highest speed of the two express trains reached 430 kilometers per hour. The data from the test was satisfactory, and the line is on schedule to go into operation at the end of this year.

This train poses special challenges, for example as both trains pass each other, an air ball current is formed, creating difficulty and danger. Japan has already successfully completed this test. China becomes the second country in the world to successfully do so.

At the end of 2003, there will be 13 express trains put into operation. There will be one train departing every 10 minutes.

The Shanghai Magnetic Suspension Express Train Project is a commercial high-speed railway aimed at reducing traffic congestion, as well as for sightseeing and touring. The main line is 30 kilometers long. It begins at Baiyang Road and South Longyang Road along Line No.2 of the subway. It ends at the Pudong International Airport.
