More than 5,000 followers of Buddhism from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao, and Taiwan island have gathered at the South Putuo Temple in Xiamen, a coastal city in East China's Fujian Province.

They are praying for peace and prosperity, as well as the unity of their motherland, and the world as a whole.

A Buddhist ceremony organized by the Buddhist Association of China took place at the South Putuo Temple on Thursday morning. This is the first major religious event held by Buddhists from across the Taiwan Straits since the SARS epidemic came to an end. Regular exchange activities between Buddhists across the Straits have now resumed.

The presidents of Buddhist Associations from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan island participated in the ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony, they said the Chinese people had endured a tough test and many difficulties during the SARS period. But they added that at the same time, China grew stronger, and the solidarity of the Chinese nation was strengthened. They also stressed that as long as the people joined hands and stood side by side, nothing would be unconquerable.

The ceremony has attracted a large number of devout believers of Buddhism from across the Straits and from the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions. Many participants are also praying that the unity of the Chinese nation can soon be realized.
