China promotes use of ".CN" domain names

China has formally kicked off activities aimed at promoting the registration and use of domain names ending with the sovereign mark of dot CN.

According to internet experts, there are only 280,000 registered users of domain names ending with dot CN because of China's late entry into this field. This number compares with more than 20 million registered clients for domain names ending with dot com. The dot com domain name servers are located in the United States.

Wu Yangyi, customer service director of China Internet Information Center, said, "Excessive reliance by a country on such international domain names may have a potential negative impact on online security for the whole country."

The China Internet Information Center, as well as four companies contracted for managing the registration of dot CN domain names have been jointly organizing promotional activities. They are primarily focused on explaining registration procedures and registration fees to potential clients. Dot CN domain names can be available for use within six hours after a client's registration information is approved. This waiting time is much shorter than the 24 hours required for opening a dot com web site. Registration fees for dot CN domain names have also been lowered sharply to 35 US dollars.
