Juan Antonio Samaranch, former Chairman of the International Olympic Committee, has expressed his confidence that Beijing will be able to host a successful Olympic Games in 2008.

The former Chairman of the IOC visited the Beijing Olympics planning committee on Tuesday afternoon. He said that he shared the same view as other high ranking officials in the IOC that Beijing's preparation work has been satisfactory.

Samaranch also said that he was amazed at the great changes in China every time he visits the country. He said he hoped that Chinese athletes will also improve their competitiveness in some weaker events.

Earlier, Samaranch met with Liu Qi, the Beijing Municipal party secretary, and discussed Beijing's preparations for the 2008 Games. After the meeting, Samaranch took part in a ceremony for the launch of his book "Olympic Memories".

With 2003 marking the "Year of Culture and Olympic Education", Samaranch presented a Chinese version of the book as a special tribute to the Chinese people. The edition is expected to help Chinese readers reach a deeper understanding of the Olympic spirit.
